Ohhhhh-noooo! A parking ticket!

So you received a parking ticket, now what?

Citations are issued for many reasons. If you have the correct parking permit properly affixed and displayed, if you are in a valid parking space, or have purchased a pay & park permit that is visible on the driver’s side dash, you have little reason to be concerned. Citations are issued when these criteria are not met. Maybe you overstayed the time limit in a loading zone? Maybe you forgot to display your parking permit or the time ran out on your parking meter? Maybe you haven’t received your permit and don’t know how to print a temporary permit?

Some words of advice: If you come back to a parking ticket on you window, don’t panic. First, review the information on the front of the citation. Photos are taken when citations are issued to help ensure that a permit was not overlooked and that
the vehicle information was recorded accurately. Parking Enforcement is performed by students like you, and humans occasionally make mistakes. You have options when this happens: Contact us!
  1. Make sure you review the reason why the ticket was issued and take a look at where you are parked for any applicable signage. Are you parked on the grass/dirt? Are you parked in a space reserved for a special permit?
  2. Make sure the ticket was actually issued to your vehicle. There have been occasions when someone has received a ticket that was issued to the vehicle parked next to them. If this happens, you may drop the citation in the drop box at the front of the UAA Campus Bookstore, or near UPD. You don’t need to make an attempt to find the owner of the vehicle.
  3. Make sure the license plate on the citation belongs to your car, If your plate is ABC123 and the ticket is issued to ABC132, you have grounds to file an appeal.
To file an appeal for an inaccurate citation or to pay for your citation, visit uaa.thepermitstore.com and click on the link for “Pay Citations.” No payment is necessary to enter your online appeal. Include as much information as you can about why you feel the citation was issued incorrectly. Online appeals are reviewed locally and answers are generally sent electronically within 2-3 business days.

Parking enforcement actually helps free up available parking spaces for permit holders and maintain pedestrian safety in the areas surrounding parking lots. Fees collected from parking citations are used to directly offset the costs of enforcement and campus improvement projects.

Regardless of the circumstances surrounding your unique parking citation, PLEASE don’t ignore it and think it will disappear. We would appreciate the chance to help you take care of it BEFORE we put your grades and transcripts on hold…
