Let's get started, shall we?

Greetings, UAA community! And welcome to UAA Life Hacks 2012, a crowd-sourced back-to-campus blog aimed at getting you through the rigors of re-entry for fall semester -- with a little  help from all your campus friends.

If  Life Hacks  isn't a familiar term to you, here's what it means: tips to survive. It has a whole history, coming from the geek world of programmers and meaning "inelegant but effective workarounds." But it's been widely adopted by folks who want to get stuff done efficiently, so they still have time to play. We thought that sounded like a good mantra for the start of a new school year. Here's the whole history on Wikipedia.

By crowd-sourced, we mean we tapped experts across the UAA Anchorage campus.  Just take a look at our list of amazing bloggers:

Joe Selmont, French literature major and SU Info Desk manager: Will share the fictional tale of Lamonte Harpe as he tries to settle in for the semester after a terribly, terribly carefree summer. Oh, how he struggles. Eight serialized episodes worth. Even as we speak, Joe is penning Episode 4; Episode 1 runs Monday morning, right along with your first classes!

Jenna! Roosdett, BFA candidate and graphic artist extraordinaire from Student Activities: Will carry her sketchbook around campus and capture the icebreaker scenes that mean back-to-campus to her. Watch for her artwork.

Nikkie Viotto, returning blogger from the Seawolf Volleyball team: Already up and competing as school opens. Welcome back, Nikkie, and good luck to the Seawolves on the court. Last year she wrote from Hawaii and California as the team traveled. Now, that's organized!

Alejandra Buitrago, our fearless USUAA Student Body President.

Grace Kramer, Volunteer Coordinator at KRUA: Welcome Grace! A junior in journalism and dedicated radiophile, she'll tell us all how to have futures as highly paid radio show personalities!

Shawn Eby, Chair of the Club Council: Welcome Shawn, and we'll look to you for information on getting connected to clubs and student life on campus.

J. Almendarez, The Northern Light Managing Editor: Jolene to those who know her, but J. to the publishing world. Jolene has only been in Alaska three weeks, from San Antonio, Texas! I have been reading about her in TNL; guaranteed she'll be taking UAA and Alaska by storm!

Fabian Philipp, Registrar's Office Admin and aviation technology student from Germany: Welcome Fabian, and thanks for taking on translating the important business of the Registrar's Office to everyone who needs it the first few weeks of school. You are critical!

Theresa Cho, University Honors College, master of many things! Welcome Theresa, we look forward to your energy and insight on how to survive the start-up of school!

Stacie Meisner already has a distinguished career at UAA (2011 Student Commencement Speaker and Volleyball team captain) and is now a grad student here. Read and be inspired here. With Stacie on our side, we will make it.

Kristi Powell from the UAA/APU Consortium Library: Welcome back, Kristi! Her posts last fall had some of the best survival tips for students on how to use the library. Thanks for returning!

John Faunce, Director of Facilities Planning & Construction: You know why he's here -- the UAA campus is changing! He'll give us the lowdown on parking lot renovations, new sidewalks, science building updates, sports arena updates.

Glenna Muncy, Director of Parking Services: This has got to be one of the toughest jobs on an expanding campus like UAA. Glenna will share all the ways to get to and navigate around campus, and avoid a parking ticket.

Linda Morgan, Director of Advising and Testing: Do you know who your advisor is? Here's where to get help, and Linda will show the way.

Bette Fenn, Nurse Practitioner and Director of the Student Health & Counseling Center: Very important to stay healthy while you become brilliant. Bette, and colleague Georgia DeKeyser, also a nurse practitioner and assistant director of the clinic, will team up to make sure you know what the clinic can do for you.

John M. Johnson, all things Veteran-related, from housing, advising, financial aid, educational benefits!

If you want to join us as a blogger, we still have room. Just call (907) 786-1490. We'll be back with KickOff and Freshman Convocation coverage. And Lamonte Harpe's debut episode. And the many posts from our excellent bloggers.
